Fall Season Concludes With Two Wins

Our fall season came to an end this past Sunday with two wins over St. Anselm’s and Lasell. It wasn’t the prettiest of scrimmages but we did beat them both on the scoreboard. Clark Lacrosse Fall Season

I wanted to touch base and let you know that we will begin practice for our fall season Friday evening. A few changes that have taken place since last season is the addition of 10 freshman to the team. We have also moved into the largest team locker room and will now be in the facility year round. We are in the process of making the room feel like a lacrosse locker room so the guys have a place to relax before practice. Hopefully by our Alumni Game which is scheduled for October 1^st in the afternoon, we will be able to show everyone in person. Last year we had a great turnout for the alumni game so if you are interested in playing or just coming to watch please let me know as the date nears.

Senior Day Sendoff: Cougars Top Wheaton 11-10 In 2OT

We got the win over the weekend to put us in a 3-way tie for two playoff spots but we were eliminated on tie breakers. I have included the playoff scenario below which was sent to me via email. The guys were very disappointed.

Congratulations Pilgrim League Post Season Participants.

#1 Springfield will host #4 MIT at a time tbd on Wednesday May 4, 2011

#2 Babson will host #3 Wheaton at 7:00pm on Wednesday May 4 , 2011.

The Championship will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday May 7, 2011 at the site of the highest remaining seed.

HOME team secures and pays officials.

Three teams were tied for the #3 seed. The seeds were determined following the tie breaking principles cut and pasted below.

After Step 'B' and 'C', Step 'D' was necessary with the following results: Wheaton .598, Clark .514, and MIT .443. Thus, Wheaton advanced to the #3 seed.

By implementing the last sentence of Step 'B', MIT gained the #4 seed by virtue of its Head to Head result vs Clark.

Good luck to all semi finalists and a public thank you to Publicist Magoffin who sent me data as soon as the last non conference contest that impacted the opponents winning percentage was concluded this evening.

5) The tie breaking procedure will be as follows:
A) Head to Head competition.

B) In the case of multiple ties the tied schools will be compared against a ranked order, beginning with the top seed until the tie is broken. For example, if three teams are tied for fourth place, then the results of those three teams’ contests against the #1 seed first, the #2 seed second, the #3 seed third (and so on) will be compared until the tie is broken. Once a multiple tie is broken, head to head competition becomes the criteria.
C) If necessary, head to head competition against common, non-conference opponents of the teams that are tied should be used. When using non-conference opponents’ results, contests held at home for all tied institutions, or on the road for all tied institutions, shall be used before looking at collective records against common non-conference opponents.
D) If necessary, the committee will evaluate the winning percentages of the tied teams opponents at the end of the regular season to break a tie. The team with the greater opponents winning percentage will advance.
E) If the difference between the opponents winning percentage is identical, a round robin coin toss will be implemented to break the tie.

Cohen Receives Coach of the Year Honors

Roche ends career amongst the best of all time

Shawn Roche from Centerport, NY, is now the all-time scoring leader for Clark University lacrosse. He also became only the second player to score 100 goals.

Roche was named a Pilgrim League 2010 First Team All Conference. Here is the press release from Clark.

His accomplishments are even more impressive when you consider the potentially life-changing injury he sustained a few years ago. Here is a nice writeup from his local paper Newsday that describes his path to success.

Here is the long awaited newsletter recapping the first three games and previewing the rest of the season. The scoring records are below and Shawn Roche, a current senior is looking to break many of the records this year. We are 0-3 to start the season with a nice home stand to hopefully gain some momentum. The team is looking good and we are beginning to get healthier every day. Panera Bread at the Alumni Game?

Maybe the co-founder, Chairman, and CEO of Panera Bread Company, Ronald M. Shaich, will be able to donate some free food for upcoming alumni event? Shaich graduated from Clark in 1976 so he actually predates the lacrosse program but he has served as a member of the Board of Trustees in the past according to his bio on the Panera website.

Coach Looking Ahead to Curry College on Wednesday

After opening the season with two losses, Coach Jeff Cohen is looking to rebound this week against Curry College.
Cohen is pleased with the effort so far. "We have been improving week to week but we have yet to put it all together. On Wednesday, we will need to execute what we have been doing in practice on a consistent basis to win the game."

The game is Wednesday at 4:00pm at Katz Field on the Curry College campus in Milton, MA. Click here for directions

In case you missed the latest Clark University buzz...

Clark's Eileen Garcia was profiled in the Faces in the Crowd section of the Feb 22 issue of Sports Illustrated.
Clark men's basketball is playing in the NCAA tournament this weekend.
Students and employees protested on campus this week about wages and working conditions of the cafeteria workers employed by Sodexo according to the Telegram and Gazette. Here is a video of the protest on youtube.
The newest contestant on ABC's "The Bachelorette" is a Clarkie. According to the ABC website, Ali Fedotowsky graduated in 2006 from Clark University.

Gillette Stadium announced the return of the New England Lacrosse Classic on Saturday, April 3, when Princeton University plays Brown University and Cornell University faces Dartmouth College.

You can start officiating games this spring if you join the Eastern Massachusetts Lacrosse Officials Association (EMLOA).

Officiating is a rewarding experience. You can get some exercise, help kids learn how to play the game, and make some pretty good cash.

Here is information from the EMLOA website

The EMLOA is offering trainings starting the last week of January. There is a mandatory clinic for all EMLOA members on Sunday, March 7th. All new candidates must attend this as well. All new members are subject to a CORI criminal record check. This is mandatory.

Cost for first year officials is $275. This includes dues ($85 – required of all EMLOA members), training class fee ($75) and a starter uniform package ($115). If you are a football official with clean uniforms, you can subtract the cost of the starter package and substitute your football shirt and hat and get the rest of the gear on your own. Contact Matt Croteau if you are interested.

EMLOA will be holding Classes for new candidates starting the last week of January, 2010. The classes are held at 3 separate locations and the same material is presented at each site. Clark Campus to be Carbon Neutral by 2030

According to a recent Telegram and Gazette article, Clark is one of 650 colleges taking the pledge to be more green. The pledge is part of Clark's participation in the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). More info about ACUPCC

The University will upgrade energy systems, promote a bike share program and work to establish a culture of sustainability.

The students have started a program called "think before you ink" designed to reduce the number of printed pages.

"students are given a “paper allowance” for how many sheets of paper they can use in a year. If they go over 500 sheets in a semester, they have to pay 10 cents a sheet." T&G 12/16/2009

A recent press release on LaxPower.com profiles Clark's new assistant lacrosse coach Nick Gallagher.

"To be able to bring in someone of Nick's playing experience and character is a huge boost for our program," said first-year head coach Jeff Cohen. "We are excited to have him join our coaching staff."

Gallagher is a former High School All-American and standout player at Ohio-Wesleyan University. He is very dedicated to sport and will be a valuable asset to the coaching staff.

The first is a Clark lacrosse clothing store that will be available only until December 4^th, but guarantees delivery for Christmas. The second web page is the newly established Clark Alumni website. It was created and will be maintained by former Clark players and will have all the updates that the Clark Lacrosse homepage will have but will be geared towards the Alumni. January 10th for Grades 9-12

Shooting, Goalie and FO Indoor Clinic

This clinic is designed for players who are interested in developing their lacrosse skills in order to reach their potential. Clark Head Coach Jeff Cohen and his staff will direct the clinic which will involve teaching Offensive players, FO men and Goalies.This is also a great opportunity to play in Clark’s top of the line Indoor Facility.

Come early and see the Clark University Campus!!!!

The clinic is for boys who are entering the grades 9-12. Clinic will be held at the:

Dolan Athletic Complex, a state of the art indoor facility.

Sunday, January 10th

2:30-3:00pm: Registration*

3:00-6:00pm: Clinic

*Registration is MANDATORY for participation. Schedule to follow.

NOTE: Sneakers must be worn in facility.

The clinic staff will include the entire Clark University Men’s Lacrosse staff.

Head Coach Jeff Cohen and Assistant Coach Nick Gallagher will share their many years of clinic and lacrosse experience.

Cost of clinic is $50 an athlete. Each athlete must reserve his place in the clinic with a $25 deposit. The deposit is nonrefundable after January 1st. The balance may be paid at registration.

The Clark Lacrosse Hall of Famer

Did you know there is only one lacrosse player in the Clark Athletics Hall of Fame?

Mike Maltais '91 is the first men's lacrosse player to be inducted into the Clark Athletic Hall of Fame. One of the most dominant offensive players in the program's history, Maltais helped lead the transition of the sport from club to varsity status during his four-year tenure.

Maltais was a three-time Patriot league all-star, an All-New England East/West all-star and two-time team Most Valuable Player. He also set all of Clark's single-game and season scoring records and career marks, many of which still stand today. Maltais earned Clark's Fred Hebert Trophy, presented to a male senior athlete for outstanding contribution to the athletic program. He is Clark's all-time leading scorer with 98 goals, 80 assists and 178 points.

After a short stint as Clark's head lacrosse coach from 1997-1998, Maltais started his own business, servicing exercise equipment in the greater Worcester area. He was also a certified cycling coach and a national ski patrol member. Maltais has been involved in many charity events, including mechanical support for American Diabetes Charity Bike Ride and Courage Classic Charity Ride for a children's hospital in Denver, Colo.
